Westchester Communities, Colleges Set ‘Relay For Life’ Events

Hundreds, if not thousands, of folks will be lacing up their running shoes this spring all over Westchester to help fight a deadly disease. The American Cancer Society says that 13 Relay for Life events have been scheduled for May 20 through June 19. The community led events will be held in: Eastchester, Mamaroneck, Chappaqua, Harrison, Katonah-Lewisboro, the Tarrytowns, Yorktown, Yonkers, Somers, Ossining and the Hendrick Hudson School District.

Eighteen teams of fledgling scientists and engineers will soon be roaring their way to victory -- or quacking, barking or squeaking -- in a FIRSTA LEGOA League tourney at a Chappaqua school. "Animal Allies," its theme, is especially apropos; one of the competition's four events requires the children and teens to make a presentation that addresses human and animal interactions ... and the problems that may arise from them.

In the wake of sex-abuse revelations surrounding former Horace Greeley High School drama teacher Christopher Schraufnagel, school Principal Robert Rhodes is inviting current and former students to attend a talk on how to deal with such instances. In an email addressed to current students, plus alumni from the classes of 2015 and 2016, Rhodes outlines a forum that will be held on Sunday, Jan. 8. The session, according to Rhodes, will be held at the school from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Chappaqua.

Chappaqua’s Wine Around Town Features Free Tastings For Shoppers

Holiday shoppers can do some wine tasting while completing their gift-buying at several local downtown Chappaqua merchants Saturday for the second annual Wine Around Town event. Sponsored by the Chappaqua-Millwood Chamber of Commerce, the free event is co-sponsored by several other businesses and features themed wine tasting at more than two dozen downtown merchants.

Underscoring is the music in a film that plays in the background during a scene or a dialogue, often with the purpose of establishing a theme or mood. Fans of classic movies, Frankenstein, and movie scores will have the chance to hear Shapiro's work in context on Friday, Oct. 28 when he conducts 15 members of The Chappaqua Orchestra for a live performance of the music during a showing of Frankenstein .
