Nigeria: Ayade Kicks Off Construction of Advanced Teachers’ Training College

The Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade has flagged off construction work on the state's West Africa Advanced Teachers' Continuous Training College. Fielding questions from journalists at the construction site located in Biase Local Government Area, Ayade, accompanied by the Deputy Governor, Prof Ivara Esu and some members of the state executive council, said the intent was to improve the performance and skills of teachers while addressing WASSCE performance in the state.

EXPERTS, community leaders and a nongovernmental organization for environmental development and information delivery, operating under the auspices of Rainforest Resource and Development Centre, RRDC, have censured the governor of Cross River State, Prof Ben Ayade, over an alleged high spate of deforestation in parts of the state by his administration under the guise of constructing a 276- km super highway. They expressed disapproval at a workshop on "Media Sensitization and Forest Community Concenrs and Super Highway" organized by RRDC in Calabar, the state capital.

C-River plans largest woodland in Africa

CROSS River State Forestry Commission has begun the cultivation of the biggest forest in Africa with the planting of five million indigenous species of trees, which in addition to the existing forest reserves would form large canopy on roads and parks across the state. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Mr. Bette Obi, told NDV at Calabar: "We have both timber and economic tree seedlings which we are planting in designated areas in the 18 local government areas stretching over 100,000 hectares across the state and this will culminate in the largest forest in Africa."

C/River to establish homeland security outfit

As part of its proactive approach to sustain the peace and security in the state, the Cross River State Government is to set up a homeland security outfit to complement the efforts of the existing security agencies in the state. Governor Ben Ayade disclosed this while receiving the French Consul-General, Laurent Polonceaux and his entourage on a courtesy visit at his private residence in Calabar.
