Westchester Communities, Colleges Set ‘Relay For Life’ Events

Hundreds, if not thousands, of folks will be lacing up their running shoes this spring all over Westchester to help fight a deadly disease. The American Cancer Society says that 13 Relay for Life events have been scheduled for May 20 through June 19. The community led events will be held in: Eastchester, Mamaroneck, Chappaqua, Harrison, Katonah-Lewisboro, the Tarrytowns, Yorktown, Yonkers, Somers, Ossining and the Hendrick Hudson School District.

Eastchester Will See Snow To Start Workweek

Several rounds of snow are possible to start a week which will see temperatures falling sharply with overnight lows in the teens by Thursday.Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high around 40, but the wind-chill factor making it feel between 25 and 35. An offshore system will bring a chance of snow or snow showers before noon Monday, with little or no accumulation expected. It will be a cloudy day with a high in the low 30s and a wind-chill value between 20 and 25. Snow is more likely Tuesday, mainly before 3 p.m., with a coating to an inch of snow possible in the area, according to AccuWeather.com, adding that it only takes a small amount of snow to cause slippery spots on roadways.

Nor’easter: High Wind Warning, Flood Watch In Effect For Eastchester

As a strong Nor'easter arrives in the area, the most updated forecast from the National Weather Service calls for a mix of snow and sleet with rain Monday night in most spots, with the wintry mix likely to continue for a longer period in Putnam and Dutchess. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect in Putnam until 7 a.m. Tuesday and in Dutchess until 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Breaking Down Timing Of Nor’easter That Will Impact Eastchester

A Nor'easter with heavy rain and fierce winds that could lead to power outages and flooding in the Hudson Valley will arrive late Sunday night and continue through early Tuesday morning with the storm being at its strongest from late Monday morning into early Monday evening. Showers are expected to arrive late Sunday and overnight and become heavy at times starting after around 10 a.m. Monday.

An eighth-grade student from Westchester took his talents from Westchester into New York City this week, where a piece of music he composed was performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Benjamin Araujo of Eastchester, who plays trombone for the Eastchester Middle School band under the direction of teacher Mark Dodge, had his latest composition "A Postcard from New York City" performed by some of the world's most talented musicians at Geffen Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Middle School Principal Scott Wynne praised Araujo for his initiative and talent, having previously written songs for the middle school band and before stepping up to the big stage with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

While many people work to ensure their homes are free of creepy crawlers, one Bronx resident is getting as many as he can in his room. Aaron Rodriguez, of Eastchester, estimates that he has a few hundred insects in his collection, comprised of about 20 tobacco hornworms, 50 cockroaches, 100 crickets and 100 max worms, in addition to a some tarantulas.
