Granite Point Lawsuit Dismissed

SOMERS, N.Y. – A State Supreme Court justice has dismissed a last-ditch effort to block construction of 23 luxury homes only steps from the Amawalk Reservoir in Granite Springs.

Throwing out a legal challenge to Somers’ tentative approval last year of the controversial development, Justice Gretchen Walsh said the subdivision’s opponents had lacked the requisite legal standing when they sued the Planning Board and developer John Harkins.

While the challengers, largely Granite Springs residents, warned broadly of potential harm to an important water source, Walsh said they “failed to factually demonstrate a specific, actual and concrete injury from which standing would flow.” The Amawalk Reservoir provides drinking water for New York City and more than 11,000 homes in Somers and Yorktown…..

Good Shepherd Church in Somers Hosts Antiques Appraisal Day

GRANITE SPRINGS, N.Y. – Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Granite Springs hosted an Antiques Appraisal and Arts Jam on Saturday, Sept. 17. Appraisers from RMZ Fine Arts & Antiques Inc. of Pearl River were on hand to appraise all types of items including jewelry, fine arts, collectibles, vintage toys and more.

The annual Arts Jam festival was also in full swing all day, providing entertainment, BBQ food and refreshments. The Arts Jam closed with an appearance by the Colgate University choral group, the Colgate 13.

Somers Cancer Survivor Goes ‘All in’ to Connect Others with Support

When leaving the house, Debra Wolf always makes sure she has her keys, wallet and a bag of brochures from Support Connection.

The retired nurse and 39-year Granite Springs resident often hands them out, hoping to connect women battling cancer with the organization’s free support services. They are the same services that “changed her life for the better.”….

Thoroughbred racehorses start young, face long road to success

GRANITE SPRINGS — At a few months old, the auburn colt doesn’t have a name, but he’s already learned to stand still, patiently regarding his handlers as they groom him in the barn where he’s spent his young life.

Right now, he’s simply called Distortion 2015 — he’s the 2015 colt out of a brilliantly sleek chestnut mare named Distortion and was sired by 1999 Belmont Stakes winner Lemon Drop Kid.

He’ll be almost 2 before Stonewall Farm owner Barry K. Schwartz files papers with his official name…..
