This is the story of that year in which I worked with Nina-and how she set me on the path that would lead to my becoming a writer, earning a Ph.D. and teaching African American Literature as well as creative writing. It is Nina's story as well-of her journey from Tryon, North Carolina to Mount Vernon, New York, just down the road from Malcolm X's widow, Dr. Betty Shabazz.

Join Mount Vernon’s Celebration Of The Bill Of Rights’ 225th Anniversary

Mayor Richard Thomas and the City of Mount Vernon will hold a celebration commemorating the 225th anniversary of the final ratification of the Bill of Rights, on Monday, Dec. 19. Thomas will be joined by County Executive Rob Astorino, representatives from the offices of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and other dignitaries. We are the birthplace of the Bill of Rights, one of the nation's first roads at Route 22 and the creators of hip-hop.

Westchester Guidance Center Official Gains Recognition For Helping Youths

Officials with The Guidance Center of Westchester are celebrating the selection of Daniel Bonnet, director of the Center for College and Careers, as a recipient of a 2016 Milli Award for his work with high school students in the New Rochelle and Mount Vernon areas to further their education and job skills. Bonnet is one of several young professionals from Westchester and Fairfield counties to be recognized with a Milli Award from Westfair Communications , parent company of the Westchester and Fairfield County Business Journals.
