News of Pelham Published February 12, 1875

In early February, 1875 -- much like recent days in 2018 -- the Town of Pelham was in the midst of a brutal cold spell that froze much of Long Island Sound and the waters off the shores of Pelham with ice so thick that people, horses, sleighs, and more could cross on the ice safely from island to island. The brutal cold, however, did not stop Pelhamites from enjoying an active social life and outdoor sports according to news of the Town published in a Mount Vernon newspaper on February 12, 1875.

Introduction " Voila! ", Judge William F. Gay of Mount Vernon must have thought at that moment more than 110 years ago when his research seemed finally to have paid off. His research revealed a potential weakness in the chain of title involving a fifty-acre farm that had been sold many decades before for development in Pelham Manor.

Until the late 19th century, citizens of the Town of Pelham and the Village of Mount Vernon obtained their water from wells and, in earlier days, streams. As the population of the region grew, however, the quality of local well water degraded and concerns arose over the ability of subterranean water to satisfy the ever-expanding need for water in the ever-growing suburban region.
