Mount Vernon Mayor: Property Tax Increase Likely As DOJ Lawsuit Looms

The Department of Justice is reportedly intending to file a lawsuit against the City of Mount Vernon for violations of the Clean Water Act that could cost taxpayers. According to Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas, the Department of Justice has given notice to city officials that they intend to file a lawsuit for violations of the Clean Water Act and a systemic refusal to adhere to environmental consent orders since 2003.

Mount Vernon Tax Preparer Sentenced For Filing False Returns

A Mount Vernon tax preparer was sentenced Tuesday to more than four years in federal prison for obstructing the IRS and preparing false and fraudulent income tax returns for his clients, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Samuel Gentle, who operated GenGen, Inc., and GenGen Financial, Inc. in Mount Vernon , prepared about 3,200 tax returns each year from 2010-2014, routinely inflating deductions for business expenses and gifts to charity, said U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in a statement released after the sentencing.
