The Mount Vernon Urban Renewal Agency has announced the furloughing of nearly a dozen longtime employees due to a lack of federal funding, according to Mayor Richard Thomas. Officials announced that 10 employees have been granted a leave of absence from their positions as Mount Vernon continues to deal with a "looming financial crisis" within the Agency that "threatened taxpayers as well as the employees."

The Department of Justice is reportedly intending to file a lawsuit against the City of Mount Vernon for violations of the Clean Water Act that could cost taxpayers. According to Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas, the Department of Justice has given notice to city officials that they intend to file a lawsuit for violations of the Clean Water Act and a systemic refusal to adhere to environmental consent orders since 2003.

Mount Vernon Teams With USDA For Student Summer Feeding Program

Thomas was joined by members of the USDA, which has approved 30 food service sites for the Summer Food Service Program in the city, which was implemented to ensure that children receive healthy meals during the summer that they would have received during the school year. The meals are offered free to Mount Vernon children that are under the age of 18. The USDA is expected to serve more than 200 million meals throughout the country to children during this summer.

FBI Task Force Asking For Tips In Five Mount Vernon Homicides

Someone out there has information and the FBI is willing to pay for it if the tips will help solve one of five Mount Vernon homicides the Safe Streets Gang Task Force have aimed their sights on to close. The homicides, which took place between 2011 and 2016, include the slayings of Rubin Davis, Dean Daniels, Jovelle Stewart, Wilbert Francis and Mario Frater, said FBI Criminal Assistant Special Agent in Charge Michael Osborn.

FBI Offers Reward In String Of Westchester Homicides

The FBI announced Tuesday that it's adding its muscle and up to $5,000 rewards to help Mount Vernon officials solve five open homicide cases. To do so, the FBI Westchester County Safe Streets Gang Task Force is asking for the public's help in solving the homicides that run from 2011 to 2016, FBI officials said.

Mayor Richard Thomas and the City of Mount Vernon will hold a celebration commemorating the 225th anniversary of the final ratification of the Bill of Rights, on Monday, Dec. 19. In their continued efforts to improve cohesion within the community, the Mount Vernon Police Department will soon sport some new gear to help build trust with the constituent they protect. Congressman Eliot Engel, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has secured an $84,000 federal grant as part of the Body Worn Camera Policy and Implementation Program to purchase body-worn camera for the Mount Vernon Police Department.
