An Iona College has started a change.org petition imploring New Rochelle school officials to resign in the wake of several violent incidents involving high school students in the past two weeks. Brendan Eckstein, a student at Iona College started the petition on Jan. 18, hours after the third stabbing incident involving students on North Avenue, including the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Valerie Schwab outside Dunkin' Donuts on Jan. 10. The petition calls for the resignation of Schools Superintendent Brian Osborne, High School Principal Reginald Richardson and the School Board "immediately due to their blatant, reckless, and careless approach to the increase in violent crime in the school that they are entrusted with."

On Thursday, Iona announced plans for SAGE Cafe, a proposed restaurant and market that will serve the needs of both Iona students and the New Rochelle community as a whole, on the ground floor of its recently constructed seven-story mixed-use facility at 690 North Ave. The initial design of SAGE Cafe includes a 3,000-square-foot "intercontinental-cuisine-influenced" restaurant and a 2,000-square-foot market and bakery.

New Rochelle's Iona College is the town's second-largest private employer which contributes as much as $258.5 million a year to the regional economy, according to a recent report. The study, conducted on behalf of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities by the Center for Governmental Research, shows that in 2015 the college spent $99.4 million in wages, providing 1,850 local jobs, and contributed $7.3 million in state income and sales tax.

Marino, a New York communications firm founded by a Westchester native and former aide to New York City Mayor Ed Koch, has been selected by New Rochelle city officials to help promote economic development in New Rochelle, city officials announced. Marino, with offices in New York City, Boston and Los Angeles, was selected after city officials put out the call for proposals for firms to help build awareness of downtown revitalization efforts in New Rochelle, spurred by a 2015 agreement with RDRXR for a downtown redevelopment for new office, retail and residential space.
