Westchester Communities, Colleges Set ‘Relay For Life’ Events

Hundreds, if not thousands, of folks will be lacing up their running shoes this spring all over Westchester to help fight a deadly disease. The American Cancer Society says that 13 Relay for Life events have been scheduled for May 20 through June 19. The community led events will be held in: Eastchester, Mamaroneck, Chappaqua, Harrison, Katonah-Lewisboro, the Tarrytowns, Yorktown, Yonkers, Somers, Ossining and the Hendrick Hudson School District.

Obituary: Edwin Shapiro, Ossining Town Justice

Edwin S. Shapiro, 86, a longtime Ossining Town Justice, died on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at his Briarcliff Manor home after a long illness. Born in 1931 in Brooklyn, he graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., in 1952 and received his law degree from Harvard in 1955.

Ossining Group Seeks Info About ‘Virtually Unknown’ WWI Memorial

The Ossining Camp Meeting Association has begun the process of restoring an elaborate decades-old World War I memorial originally constructed in Ossining by Swedish Methodists from Brooklyn. In a statement announcing the Camp Meeting Association's initiative, Miguel Hernandez said the group is seeking the public's help in returning the "virtually unknown memorial" to its former glory.

Ossining H.S. Robotics Team Wins Third Place, ‘Motivate’ Award

The Ossining school district continued a successful run in the field of robotics this weekend when students from Ossining High School were recognized at the FIRST Tech Challenge Hudson Valley qualifying tournament. The Ossining High School Robotics Team, which placed third in the Jan. 21 tournament in Yonkers, is now set to move on the regional finals on Feb. 5 at Pace University, according to a statement from the Ossining school district.

Ossining’s Robotics Wizards Move To First Lego League Tourney Semifinals

A group of Ossining middle school students with a collective talent for robotics has advanced to the semifinals of the Hudson Valley FIRST LEGO League qualifying tournament. The team, which goes by the name Robotics Wizards, hails from Anne M. Dorner Middle School, according to a statement from the Ossining school district, which said the team scored well in the three-part competition on Jan. 21 in Chappaqua.

Maryknoll Sister Mary Edna Brophy, 90

Longtime Maryknoller Sister Mary Edna Brophy, a missioner to Hong Kong, died on Friday, Jan. 13, in Ossining. She was 90. A Vespers service will be held for her at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25 at the Maryknoll Sisters Center, 10 Pinesbridge Road.

Nor’easter: Wind Advisory, Flood Watch For Ossining

As a strong Nor'easter arrives in the area, the most updated forecast from the National Weather Service calls for a mix of snow and sleet with rain Thursday night in most spots, with the wintry mix likely to continue for a longer period in Putnam and Dutchess. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect in Putnam until 7 a.m. Tuesday and in Dutchess until 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Regeneron Congratulates Ossining Science Talent Search Scholars

A delegation of staff and scientists from Tarrytown-based Regeneron Pharmaceuticals recently visited Ossining High School to give their congratulations to the school's three 2017 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars. The Regeneron Science Talent Search is the nation's oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition and is a program of the Society for Science & the Public, according to a release from the Ossining Union Free School District.

Search On For Ossining Teen Missing Since Dec. 11

Authorities in Westchester County, New York City and elsewhere are searching for a 15-year-old Ossining girl missing for more than three weeks. Shilah Carter, whose is to celebrate her 16th birthday on Jan. 8, is believed to have run away on Dec. 11, according to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services .

Riverkeeper Applauds Indian Point Closing

On Monday, Entergy, which owns Indian Point, announced it will close the nuclear plant by 2021 as part of an agreement with Riverkeeper, an Ossining-based organization dedicated to defending New York's waterways. As part of the agreement that was brokered with Entergy and New York State, Riverkeeper agreed to drop its lawsuits against the plant.

Three Ossining Students Semifinalists In National Science Competition

Science education is thriving at Ossining High School where three of its students have been selected as semifinalists in the 2017 National Regeneron Science Talent Search. Celine Khoo, Reid Komosa and Adriana Scanteianu, students in the Fundamentals of Science Research Program, are among 300 seniors nationwide who were chosen to advance to the next phase of the competition, which is produced by the Society for Science & the Public and sponsored by Regeneron.

Sister Margaret Lyons, 95, a missioner to Chile and El Salvador, died Tuesday at the Maryknoll Sisters Center, in Ossining, where she was a sister for 69 years. Born in South Boston, Mass., on March 16, 1921, to Margaret Mary Lyons and John Joseph Lyons, she received the name Marjorie Ann at baptism.
