Christopher Columbus Statue Restored In Yonkers Park Following Vandalism

Fresh on the heels of Columbus Day holiday celebrations, a statue of Christopher Columbus has been restored in a Yonkers park after it was vandalized in August. Yonkers Police were dispatched to Columbus Park shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, where there were reports of a vandalism incident, prompting an investigation that led to the arrest of 27-year-old city resident Emmanuel Santiago Batista, who allegedly destroyed the bust with a baseball bat.

Following multiple acts of vandalism on Christopher Columbus statues since August, a militant antifa group has announced "Deface Columbus Day" on Oct. 9 as a coordinated campaign to deface and destroy more historical monuments. In Yonkers, New York, a Columbus statue was beheaded on Aug. 30. Antifa vandals were also responsible for the destruction of the oldest Christopher Columbus monument in the nation on Aug. 21. Vandals left the messages "Racism: Tear it down" and "The future is racial and economic justice."
