MGM buying Yonkers, N.Y., casino, says it’s still committed to Bridgeport

Saying it remains committed to developing a resort casino in Bridgeport, MGM Resorts International announced today it's acquiring Empire City, a racetrack casino in Yonkers, N.Y., for $850 million. MGM Resorts proposed a Bridgeport casino last year, announcing it intended to push for the state legislature to establish a competitive-bidding process for a commercial casino license.

The $850 million purchase of the Empire City Casino in Yonkers by MGM Resorts International is a "very big deal," according to the former top gambling regulator in New York. John Sabini, who now runs a public affairs firm , said the 97-acre property at Yonkers has come a long way in the last 20 years, when it was just a "sleepy track" with a questionable future.

MGM Resorts Buys Empire City Casino, Yonkers Raceway For $850 Million

MGM Resorts International and MGM Growth Properties LLC announced that MGM Resorts has entered into an agreement to acquire the Empire City Casino's race track, Yonkers Raceway, and the casino for $850 million. MGM Resorts and MGP have entered into an agreement whereby MGP will acquire the developed real property associated with Empire City from MGM Resorts and lease it back to a subsidiary of MGM Resorts, after which a subsidiary of MGM Resorts will operate the property, it was announced on Tuesday morning, May 29. "We are excited to announce the addition of Empire City to the MGM Resorts portfolio," said Jim Murren, chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International.
