HOLLYWOOD ON THE HUDSON: Yonkers Culinary Students Tour Lionsgate Studios’ Kitchen

WPIX – TV: It’s the field trip that dreams are made of for some high school students in Yonkers from the Charter School Of Educational Excellence.

YONKERS: The culinary students from ninth through 12th grade got the chance to tour Lionsgate Studios, where the Starz TV show “Raising Kanan” gets filmed.

They’re getting the opportunity to see where the culinary world can take them.

Jane Carroll, with Jane Foodie, runs a catering kitchen for Lionsgate studios.

”I want them to see how exciting it is catering can be exciting. They’ll have an opportunity to see how we interact so closely with the cast and crew,” said Carrol.

“It gives them opportunity and basically real-world experience when it comes to seeing what else they can do beyond the actual opening of books, and what they can use and build with their own hands, and they’re honing a craft.”….

YONKERS HISTORY:Yonkers Boasts Numerous High Profile Tennis Players, Including Vincent Richards?

“Vinnie” Richards was born in #YonkersNY on March 20, 1903, son of Edward J. and Mary McQuade Richards.

His father was a well-known runner as was his brother, Raymond, three times schoolboy race champion in Yonkers.

The first tennis court he ever played on he built with his brother on VanCortlandt Park Avenue .

From the age of eight to ten years he practiced his game at the old Glancy Courts on Mclean Ave.and Stone Street.

In 1918, at the age of 15, he won his first national title, the National Boys’ Outdoor Singles Championships.

A year later he defeated Bill Tilden for the National Indoor Singles Championships.

He went on to win 30 national and world championships, a feat that made him an all time sports immortal.

By 1930 he had traveled 1,200,000 miles and played on five continents, and was rated one of the top volleyers in tennis history….

Gov. #KathyHochulhas proposed loosening the cap on the number of charters allowed in the #NewYorkCity’s five boroughs despite resistance from the state legislature’s Democratic supermajorities led by #Bronx Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie and #Yonkers‘ Senate Majority Leader #AndreaStewartCousins.

The issue has been key during negotiations over the state budget, which is due to be approved Saturday, although Albany Democrats expect negotiations to not conclude by that deadline.

Supporters say more charter schools – which are publicly funded but privately run – would give minority parents in particular more options for educating their children without having to send them to underperforming public schools…..
