Despite McConaughey’s Efforts, ‘Gold’ Proves Lackluster

‘Gold’ movie review: Matthew McConaughey’s bonkers performance shoulders so-so drama

His character, Kenny Wells, is a capitalist dreamer, a prospector who hits bottom and takes a desperate gamble on a possible gold mine deep in the Indonesian jungle. For the role, McConaughey grew a beer-swollen paunch, capped his pearly whites with jagged falsies, and swept about 17 long hairs over a balding pate merging with a mass of greasy curls licking the top of his collar.
