Harford Community College exhibit, programs celebrate Aberdeen Proving Ground’s 100 years

For 100 years, Aberdeen Proving Ground has been a major economic and social force in Harford County and a new exhibit, APG as Catalyst: Harford County’s Changing Landscape, opens on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Harford Community College to commemorate the anniversary with “a scholarly, balanced and humanistic exploration of how APG’s presence has shaped the lives, histories, economy and culture of Harford Countians.” The exhibit will be open from 1 to 7 p.m. in the Hays-Heighe House at Harford Community College.

After a long and much-criticized search, the US Army has chosen Sig Sauer to produce its next generation of handgun, eventually replacing the current standard issue sidearm, the Beretta M9 pistol. “Following a thorough operational test, fielding of the modular handgun is expected to begin in 2017,” the Army said in a statement announcing the decision Thursday.

President Obama Commutes Chelsea Manning’s Sentence

Manning is one of 64 inmates who received pardons from Obama as part of the tradition of outgoing U.S. presidents shortening and commuting the sentences of inmates during their final days in office. Manning is scheduled to be released from Fort Leavenworth on May 17. In 2010, Manning, then an intelligence analyst for the U.S. Army, leaked an enormous batch of classified documents to Julian Assange and Wikileaks that exposed major military and diplomatic activities being conducted by the U.S. government.
