A series of sex education textbooks used in elementary schools in China has triggered a debate online after a mother in Zhejiang Province posted pictures from the textbooks on Weibo. Published by Beijing Normal University, the books contain illustrations showing reproductive organs and discussions about sexual abuse, among others topics, prompting some parents to argue that the content is too graphic for young children .

Diabetes drug may be effective against deadly form of breast cancer, study suggests

Researchers in China have discovered that a metabolic enzyme called AKR1B1 drives an aggressive type of breast cancer . The study, “AKR1B1 promotes basal-like breast cancer progression by a positive feedback loop that activates the EMT program,” which has been published in The Journal of Experimental Medicine , suggests that an inhibitor of this enzyme currently used to treat diabetes patients could be an effective therapy for this frequently deadly form of cancer .

South China’s Guangxi reports two more H7N9 cases

Two more human cases of H7N9 bird flu were reported in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Monday, bringing the total number of infections to eight in the region this year. The two patients, from the cities of Baise and Wuzhou, are in critical condition, said a statement issued by the regional health and family planning commission.

On 5 January 2017, the Department of Health, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region notified WHO of a case of laboratory-confirmed human infection with avian influenza A virus and on 9 January 2017, the National Health and Family Planning Commission of China notified WHO of 106 additional laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with avian influenza A virus. On 5 January 2017, a human case of infection with avian influenza A was reported from the Department of Health, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region .

Beijing, Jan 13 : A new human H7N9 avian flu case has been reported in Foshan City in south China’s Guangdong Province, local authorities said today. The patient, a 41-year-old poultry vendor, is in critical condition and receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Foshan, the city’s Health and Family Planning Bureau said.
