MacDonald, Dettwiler CEO: Head office may move from Vancouver to U.S. by 2019

Canada’s leader in space technology, MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd., may end up moving its head office to the United States within two years, but that’s only one possible outcome of its proposed takeover of Colorado-based DigitalGlobe. The Vancouver-based company has made a firm commitment that DigitalGlobe’s ultimate parent will be a U.S. company by the end of 2019 _ although there’s been no decision yet about how that will be done, MDA CEO Howard Lance said Friday.

DARPA sued as competition to build space robots heats up

Orbital ATK, a Dulles-based aerospace manufacturer, is suing the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency over plans to award a Canadian firm a $15 million contract to build a fleet of space-faring robots capable of repairing government and commercial satellites. Satellites are often declared obsolete because of problems that could be fixed easily if the objects were accessible, and the satellites’ owners are saddled with the extra costs of sending replacements into orbit.

Orbital argues the federal program, called the Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites, would unfairly compete with its own privately funded effort, a system called the Mission Extension Vehicle 1, backed by at least $200 million from investors.

Despite headwinds, future still bright for B.C. satellite technology firm MDA

Investors hoping a new American chief executive officer at MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. would help boost the shares of the satellite technology firm may have to be patient this year, analysts say. A weaker communications satellite market and some uncertainty around how much its initiative to boost its U.S. defence business will cost the company have been – and will continue to be – headwinds for the company, known as MDA.
