CAPE TOWN: Darren Fichardt birdied the final hole to secure a one-shot victory at the Joburg Open on Sunday and a first European Tour title in four years.The 41-year-old South African held his nerve at the last to finish 15-under-par at the rain-affected tournament at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Club, edging Stuart Manley of Wales and Englishman Paul Waring.Fichardt and Waring had been level going into the last round after the tournament was cut to 54-holes because of persistent thunderstorms through the week that left the course waterlogged.There was another two-hour delay on Sunday before Fichardt set the early pace, along with compatriot Jacques Kruyswijk, whose hopes ended with a double bogey six on the 14th.Fichardt was two shots ahead going into the last three holes but Waring birdied the 16th and Fichardt carded his only bogey of the round on the 17th.A birdie from close … (more)

Brett Rumford of Australia shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday to lead the World Super 6 tournament by five strokes and guarantee himself a bye in the first round of match play. Rumford had a 17-under total of 199 in the tournament at Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Western Australia, which is being sanctioned by the European, Australian and Asian tours.

PGA professional and 1992 NZ Open winner Grant Waite has confirmed he will compete in the 93rd instalment of the event, which will be played at Millbrook Resort and The Hills between March 9-12. Not since Dunedin’s Mahal Pearce held the trophy aloft in 2003 has a New Zealander won the trophy, and the drought is set to again be the talking point ahead of this year’s tournament in Arrowtown.
