New York City plans to open 90 new homeless shelters

New York plans to open 90 new shelters as city officials struggle to get a handle on homelessness, which has risen over the past few decades to its highest level in almost a century, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Tuesday. The move is intended to ease crowding in current shelters and allow the city to move away from housing people in so-called “cluster sites,” which have been criticized as expensive and unsafe.

At the annual World Hijab Day celebration, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito declared that Muslim women are “at the forefront of the resistance” against President Donald Trump ‘s Muslim travel ban and intolerance of others-and expressed her solidarity with the Muslim community. Last week, Trump signed an executive order temporarily barring entry to the country for people coming from seven Muslim-majority countries-Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Libya and Yemen.

Bennington MFA writing program hosts reading series

Critically acclaimed, award-winning authors and faculty of the Bennington College Writing Seminars will offer an evening reading series during the MFA program’s winter residency from Thursday, Jan. 5 through Friday, Jan. 13. Each event in the Writers Reading series occurs from 7 to 8 p.m. in Tishman Lecture Hall, with one exception . All events are free and open to the public.
