Alonso saddened by “lost” day of McLaren testing

Fernando Alonso admits he was both “disappointed” and “sad” after he was only able to complete 29 laps with the new McLaren MCL32 in testing in Barcelona. Alonso had an oil system problem right at the start of the morning session, and then had other issues, including an engine shutdown, when he returned to the track in the afternoon.

Prototype series launched in Australia

There will be a dedicated sports prototype series in Australia this year, with the introduction of the all-new Australian Prototype Series. The APS is based on the former Australian Sports Racer Series, and will cater for open-top and Le Mans-style racing cars.

JOAN Barreda has become the clear favourite to win his first Dakar Rally after a dramatic end to Stage 4. The Spaniard leads the motorcycle class by over 18 minutes after one of his biggest threats, Toby Price, crashed out of the rally late in the stage. Matthias Walkner went on to claim the day’s two-wheel win, while Cyril Despres claimed his first stage win of 2017 in the car class.
