Strong quake damages buildings in southern Philippines

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 shook a southern Philippine region late Friday, damaging some buildings, knocking out power and sending residents fleeing to safety, officials said. There were no immediate reports of injuries from the quake in Surigao del Norte province, which struck about 14 kilometres northwest of Surigao city at a relatively shallow depth of 11 kilometres , officials said.

3 quakes shake Italy, isolating towns blanketed under snow

Three strong earthquakes shook central Italy in the space of an hour Wednesday, striking the same region that suffered a series of deadly quakes last year and further isolating towns that have been buried under more than a meter of snow for days. The first tremor, with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3, hit Montereale at about 10:25 a.m. , according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Magnitude 7.7 earthquake hits off Chilean coast

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred off the coast of southern Chile Sunday, 40 km southwest of Puerto Quellon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami threat message for parts of the Pacific Ocean close to the earthquake.
