Google is preparing to release a wireless set-top box for the new generation of ultra-HD “4K” TVs, even as the company drastically scales back its high-speed internet and TV Google Fiber efforts. Recent filings with the FCC reveal that Google has received authorization to bring to market a “4K wireless TV box.”
Facebook takes aim at Youtube with new standalone TV app
The move could allow it to eventually better compete with the likes of YouTube and traditional television channels for advertising revenue. Users with Apple TV, Amazon’s Fire TV and Samsung’s Smart TVs will be able to watch Facebook’s user-generated videos directly on their televisions.
WVIA expects $26 million from sale of broadcast spectrum
TV expects to receive nearly $26 million from the Federal Communications Commission-driven sale of its airwaves in a move the station said will have little impact on viewers but will help secure the future of public broadcasting in Northeastern Pennsylvania. WVIA disclosed the completed broadcast spectrum sale and announced it has entered a channel-sharing agreement with the parent company of the WNEP-TV on Friday after the FCC lifted a “quiet period” that prohibited the public broadcaster from even discussing its participation in the secretive auction process.
FCC to Vote on Advanced US Broadcast TV Standards
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission is moving forward to advance a new broadcasting standard that would improve television picture quality, allow better access to programs via mobile phones and let broadcasters turn on a television set to send emergency alerts. Republican FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said the commission will vote Feb. 23 on whether to grant initial approval on a rule to allow broadcasters to use the new standard on a voluntary basis.

LG Electronics is introducing the first ATSC 3.0-enabled 4K Ultra HD TVs to support the US-wide deployment of the next-gen TV broadcast standard in South Korea. Starting spring 2017 – in advance of the 2018 Winter Olympics – new 2017 models of LG 4K Ultra HD TVs and large-screen LG smart TVs sold in Korea will have both ATSC 3.0 and ATSC 1.0 tuners.
Chinese Video Giant Leshi’s in Talks to Raise $1.4 Billion
Leshi Internet Information & Technology Co., the Chinese video-streaming service backed by the billionaire founder of cash-strapped online giant LeEco, said it’s in discussions to raise more than 10 billion yuan from a group of undisclosed strategic investors. The company sometimes described as a local Netflix plans to raise the money through a private issuance of stock and other avenues, it said in a filing with the Shenzhen stock exchange Wednesday.
