Holiday merriment begins Saturday, Dec. 3 with the annual Peekskill Tree Lighting Ceremony at the gazebo, on the corner of Division and Park Streets. The season's 2016 Peekskill Makes Me Merry holiday campaign, sponsored by the Peekskill Business Improvement District, kicks off at 4:30 p.m. with the ceremony at the gazebo.
A 25-year-old Peekskill resident was sentenced to 15 years in state prison for killing a man on Park Street last December. Janiel Myke was sentenced after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the first degree, , in the shooting death of Stephen Agosto of Peekskill.
A crowdfunding page called "Heat for the Sisters" has garnered almost $124,000 for the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Peekskill. The goal is to raise $350,000 for the 15-year-old convent, which has nonworking boilers and a chapel in need of heating repairs.
