Four demonstrators who got inside part of pipe while protesting the controversial Algonquin Natural Gas Pipeline in Verplanck are facing trespassing charges this morning. The protesters reached a deal with a state police tactical team on Monday evening before crawling out of the pipe around 11:30 p.m. Spectra Energy is building the controversial project that expands the natural gas pipeline underground.
Four protesters who crawled inside lengths of pipeline along the Hudson River to stop Spectra Energy from dragging its 42-inch diameter, high-pressure, methane gas pipeline under the Hudson River, remain inside the pipe late Monday. The protesters have been inside the pipe for more than seven hours after sneaking into the work area earlier Monday, said Nancy Vann of Resist Spectra.
Foes of a controversial gas pipeline project sang as they marched to the spot where Spectra Energy crews were drilling Friday in Verplanck, according to a spokeswoman for one of the activist groups. Once there, a few of the 30 or so protesters attempted to block construction vehicles and were arrested, said Nancy Vann of ResistAIM.
