Kawasaki Heavy wins $1.4 billion subway car contract from New York transit authority

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Wednesday approved a $1.4 billion deal to buy 535 train cars for its subway system from a subsidiary of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. The contract with MTA New York City Transit includes options for up to 1,077 additional cars, for 1,612 cars total, at a cost of $3.7 billion, pending approval by the board of directors. Kawasaki Rail Car Inc., based in Yonkers, New York, will supply cutting-edge, next-generation R211 subway cars with entrances 8 inches wider than existing cars.
