THOMAS DINAPOLI: Metro-North Contractor Exceeds Established Standards Of Reaching Out To The Homeless At The Yonkers Train Station

Metro North Has Made The Yonkers Train Station Less Of A Homeless Hangout

NEW YORK STATE COMPTROLLER: The Metro-North Railroad’s homeless outreach contractor made 148 visits to the Yonkers train station to help homeless people and find them alternative shelter and support services, a state comptroller’s audit.

Metro-North in 2017 hired nonprofit Bowery Residents’ Committee to do outreach at stations.

The New York Comptroller Thomas Dinapoli audited the $2 million five-year contract and questioned whether the contractor was sending the proper amount of outreach workers at other Westchester County train stations.

Outreach workers were supposed to visit each station 96 times in between September 2017 and July 2018 and out performed in Yonkers, but the comptroller’s office found that other stations did not meet this contractual requirement.

For Example:

  • 18 outreach visits at Croton-Harmon station.
  • 41 visits at the Peekskill station.
  • 51 visits at Tarrytown.
  • 91 visits at Poughkeepsie
  • One visit at Beacon

Metro-North told the comptroller’s office, that going forward it would monitor the contracted outreach workers more closely to insure that they meet their contractual requirements to help the homeless at all Westchester County Train Stations.
