Burglar Targeting Westchester Food Markets Faces Series Of Charges

A 46-year-old man who allegedly manipulated metal roll-down security gates to break into Westchester food marts and steal thousands of dollars is facing a host of criminal charges. Kareem Johnakin, of Bethlam, Pennsylvania, was arraigned in Westchester County Court following a multi-count indictment for burglarizing at least five businesses in Yonkers and New Rochelle last year.

On Thursday, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. announced that that Bronx resident Gregory Harris, 41, has been sentenced to 11 years in state prison after he was found guilty of multiple counts of robbery related to four incidents at the same Central Park Avenue gas station in Yonkers in 2016.

A man who allegedly attempted to steal another person's identity at multiple Westchester County banks took the mantra "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again" to a new level. Bronx resident Jose Cabrera has been arraigned on a 14-count indictment after he allegedly went to banks in Mount Vernon, Yonkers, Ossining and Thornwood with a forged Connecticut driver's license and attempted to take out cash over the course of a single afternoon.

Video Helps Federal Judge Convict Yonkers Ex-Con Of Stashing Gun In Garbage

A federal judge in Newark convicted a Yonkers ex-con of having a gun in the city of Passaic, thanks to surveillance video that caught him stashing it in a garbage can before police showed up. Francisco Vallejo, 28, had been convicted of three previous felonies and was prohibited from having a firearm, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito noted after U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton issued a guilty verdict on Thursday following a four-day bench trial.
