Mayer Wins Westchester State Senate Seat In Special Election

Democratic Assembly Member Shelley Mayer defeated Republican Jillian Killian in a special election Tuesday for the state senate seat in the 37th district vacated by George Latimer, who was elected Westchester County Executive. The 37th Senate District covers the cities of New Rochelle, Rye, White Plains, Yonkers and the towns of Bedford, Harrison, Mamaroneck, North Castle, Rye, Eastchester.

Republican Julie Killian, a former Rye city councilwoman, is taking on Democrat Shelley Mayer, an assemblywoman from Yonkers, in a contest that has generated national attention and sparked millions of dollars of spending by the candidates and their allies on both sides of the aisle. "It looks to be an awful lot of money spent," said Jeanne Zaino, a political science professor at Iona College in New Rochelle.

Board Names Middle School Math Chair

Tiffany Sassone, an assistant principal and coordinator of the Math Science Partnership Project in Yonkers, will become the next middle school math department chairperson in New Rochelle on March 7. Sassone was hired Tuesday by the New Rochelle Board of Education to replace John Pratt, who retired. She will maintain the math instructional program, review curriculum materials and supervise the quality of math instruction, among other duties, at Albert Leonard and Isaac E. Young middle schools.
