STATEMENT: From Yonkers City Council Republican Minority Leader Mike Breen About School Funding

Councilman Mike Breen
City Hall, Suite 407
40 South Broadway
Yonkers, N.Y. 10701
914-377-6315

“I was proud to stand with Mayor Mike Spano, my Yonkers City Council colleagues, local union leaders, Board of Education Trustees, the Superintendent of Schools and most importantly, students, to call on New York State to provide additional state education aid to Yonkers.

For decades our Public Schools have been woefully underfunded by the State of New York while the City of Yonkers has provided records amount of aid for our students.

Our test scores and graduation rates rise as the State funding remains stagnant.

That is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, parents, administration and Board of Education Trustees.

This year, the Yonkers Public Schools faces a $60 million deficit which could potentially lead to major cuts and layoffs.

At this press conference we kicked off the “Fund Schools Fairly” campaign to fix the chronic under funding from Albany and call for a permanent, structural change to the state aid formula to fund Yonkers fairly.”

NEVER FORGET: Yonkers Students Stirred By Witnesses’ Stories At 25th Annual Holocaust Remembrance

WWII liberator Alan Moskin made a huge impact on Yonkers students who heard him speak about the atrocities of war.

Nearly 3,000 5th – 12th grade students heard first hand from Holocaust survivors and liberators during the 25th annual Holocaust Remembrance, held this year from March 11 – March 15 at the Lincoln Park Jewish Center.

The impact of hearing from surviving witnesses to one of humanity’s great atrocities was evident in the audience of students, teachers, administrators and community members.

STATEMENT From Mayor Mike Spano

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, along with the Yonkers Board of Education Trustees, the Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin M. Quezada, Yonkers City Councilmembers, local union leaders and Yonkers Public School students, this week gathered in Albany to call on New York State to provide additional state education aid to Yonkers.

“In just 15 days Yonkers will find out whether we are treated fairly in this year’s State Budget.

If we aren’t, our schools face a $45-$60 million budget gap and potential teacher layoffs.

That’s why I joined City Councilmembers, teachers and other union leaders this week to meet with our Albany leaders and tell them this year’s State Budget must finally treat Yonkers fairly.

We met with Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, who now is one of the three people who will negotiate this year’s budget, and with Senate Education Committee Chair Senator Shelley Mayer, whose Committee is in charge of all Senate education legislation.

Our message was simple: Don’t agree to any State Budget unless it treats Yonkers fairly.

We also met with our new Assemblyman Nader Sayegh and long-time Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, as well as the Governor’s budget staff, and warned that without a fair budget we may have to cut hundreds of teaching positions.

If you want to know what you can do, call the Governor and your Albany representatives. Express your appreciation for their past support of Yonkers Schools, and urge them to stand strong for Yonkers.

Together we can provide the children of Yonkers with the education they deserve.

With everyone’s help I am confident this will be the year Albany stops shortchanging our city.”
