An Athens, Georgia, man has been charged with simple battery after throwing a pork chop at his mother, police said. At about 7:30 p.m. Monday, Terry Bernard Ball Jr., 29, was eating at home when he became upset because his mother hadn’t gotten cigarettes for him.

Richard Schickel, a noted movie critic for Life and Time magazines who also wrote dozens of books and made documentaries about Hollywood, has died. He was 84. Schickel, who’d had a series of strokes, died on Saturday in Los Angeles from complications of dementia, his daughter, Erika Schickel, told the New York Times.
