Of course, everyone knows that Harper Lee, who died Feb. 19 at age 89, was not Scout, the protagonist of her novel “To Kill a Mockingbird.” But the book was so beloved, and Lee herself had withdrawn so completely from public life, that she and Scout became twin tomboys frozen in time.

Frank Kelly, 77, who played Father Jack in the hit comedy Father Ted, died in February, as did To Kill A Mockingbird author Harper Lee, 89. March saw the deaths of Paul Daniels, 77, football hero Johan Cruyff, 68, Beatles producer George Martin, 90, and Corbett. August saw the deaths of Hollywood legend Gene Wilder, 83 famous for Willy Wonka and Kenny Baker, 81, the man behind Star Wars robot R2D2.
Deal set to stage ‘Mockingbird’ play in author’s hometown
A deal has been reached to continue staging the annual dramatic production of “To Kill a Mockingbird” in the Alabama hometown of author Harper Lee. The 2017 version of the play appeared to be in jeopardy weeks ago amid squabbling.
