Stefanie Martini takes on Dame Helen Mirren’s role in Prime Suspect 1973

Rising star Stefanie Martini has said she was determined not to “crumble” under the pressure of following in Dame Helen Mirren’s footsteps in the Prime Suspect prequel. The actress plays a young Jane Tennison – the character made famous by Dame Helen – in ITV’s Prime Suspect 1973, which charts the rise of the policewoman as she assists in her first murder investigation.

A prequel to the hit TV drama Prime Suspect gets underway on ITV One tonight and will feature three cars owned by one man well known to many in Haverhill. Called Prime Suspect 1973, the crime drama heads back to the title year and the start of the police career of the central character, Jane Tennison.

Dame Helen Mirren has hailed The Queen writer’s career as a “British phenomenon” as she presented him with the British Film Institute’s highest honour. Peter Morgan CBE, who also penned The Crown, Frost/Nixon and The Last King Of Scotland, was awarded with the BFI Fellowship at a ceremony on Tuesday night.
