Arts: Public radio yields musical discovery

When I find myself driving around some other town in a rental car, my standard practice is to listen to the local public radio station, which is often run by a local university. I usually find it to be a dependable source of news , a good barometer of the local art scene and a way to hear some music I might not otherwise hear.

Leslie Odom Jr., of “Hamilton” fame, will perform with the San Diego Symphony on July 7 and 8. The San Diego Symphony’s Bayside Summer Nights 2017 concert series promises such established stars as Tony Bennett and New Orleans legend Dr. John, as well as up-and-coming artists like Leslie Odom Jr., fresh from the Broadway smash musical “Hamilton.” Megan Swan, the symphony’s associate director of artistic planning, also predicts Harry Potter sightings and whiffs of Aqua Net hair spray.

Valley Symphony plans galactic program

The Valley Symphony Orchestra’s “Star Wars and Galactic Pops” concert Friday is its first at the new, state-of-the-art McAllen Performing Arts Center. It was an unusually hot February day to sit outside and play music for more than an hour, but that’s exactly what the ensemble did. As bewildered foot traffic and motorists passed by on Grand Avenue, the ensemble played Terry Riley’s hypnotic “In C.” They played the kind of instruments you’d expect to see in concert halls; instead of an orchestral pit or heavy curtains, though, their stringed instruments and sheet music were surrounded by chain-link fences and asphalt.
