Independent filmmaking thriving in Wichita

If there’s one event that crystallizes just how far filmmaking in Wichita has come in recent years, it’s Down to the Wire. The event, put on by the Tallgrass Film Association and CreativeRush every year since 2012 , is a 24-hour film race, where teams of local filmmakers create short films in that time span, competing to win a grand prize.

Wagonmasters throw together chili feed to help injured officer

Usually, the Wichita Wagonmasters cook large amounts of chili only in September for the popular Wichita Wagonmaster’s Downtown Chili Cookoff . On Saturday, Feb. 25, the Wagonmasters will be putting on a chili feed in Old Town Square , Second and Mead, with the goal of raising money to benefit Wichita police Officer Brian Arterburn, who suffered injuries to his chest, abdomen and brain after being run over by a stolen car on on Feb. 7. He’s still in critical condition at a local hospital.

You may be hearing that plea a lot this coming year from Wichita chefs and restaurateurs who have agreed to participate in a fun promotion that launches Sunday at Wichita Brewing Company . Owner Greg Gifford, who dreams up WBC’s many inventive promotions, invited me and 11 local restauranteurs to invent a pizza that he’ll serve at both Wichita Brewing Company restaurants, 8815 E. 13th St. N. and 535 N. Woodlawn, throughout 2017.
