Abandoned US theatres frozen in time after last curtain call as locations remain mystery
Abandoned theatres that once pleasured millions remain frozen in time across the US.They were the backbone of the entertainment industry but as time went on their attendances shrank. These majestic buildings lost their monopoly on audiences and, one by one, started to draw their final curtain. A few of the most spectacular theatres remain abandoned, shuttered and falling apart. But thanks to avid urban exploring photographer Matthew Christopher of Abandoned America, we are able to bring a selection of snaps from what remains of these stunning buildingsREAD MORE: Inside abandoned Chernobyl in Ukraine frozen in time but decaying since nuclear disasterThere's lots of quality news coming out of the US.Speaking about the venues, Matthew says: "It's an era I never knew, and perhaps one I would never believe was as fantastic as it was were it not for the fact that I have seen the remains. "While theatre and film are still a part of our culture, the ability to do so in a majestic palace of a theatre is something I wonder if future generations will ever know."While Matthew remains tight-lipped on the locations of these snaps, they still show a fascinating modern look into a bygone era.Photographer Matthew Christopher has a regular podcast, where he tells the stories behind the ruins he visits, including a feature on abandoned theatres. You can follow his work on Facebook and Instagram, or by visiting his website.
