The population was 27,472 at the 2010 census.\u00a0Harrison was ranked sixth in the list of the top 10 places to live in New York State for 2014 according to the national online real estate brokerage Movoto.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a title=\"Forbes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forbes\">Forbes<\/a>, Harrison is the 326th wealthiest place in the United States with a median sale price of $1,230,625, slightly below that of <a title=\"Chappaqua, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chappaqua,_New_York\">Chappaqua<\/a>.\u00a0<a title=\"Fundera\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fundera\">Fundera<\/a> ranked Harrison the best place in New York for small business.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"History\" class=\"mw-headline\">History<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Harrison was established in 1696 by a patent granted by the British government to John Harrison and three others, who had a year earlier bargained with local Native Americans to purchase an area of land above Westchester Path (an old trail that led from Manhattan to Port Chester) and below Rye Lake.Local custom holds that Harrison was given 24 hours to ride his horse around the area he could claim, and the horse couldn&#8217;t swim or didn&#8217;t want to get its feet wet, but this is folklore.\u00a0In fact, the land below Westchester Path and along Long Island Sound had already been purchased and partly developed by the settlers of Rye, NY.<\/p>\n<p>The area that became Harrison had also been sold in 1661 or 1662, and again in 1666, to Peter Disbrow, John Budd, and other investors or early residents of Rye.\u00a0Disbrow and Budd evidently lost their paperwork and the land was ultimately granted to Harrison and his co-investors in 1696. So upset were the people or Rye that they seceded to the Colony of Connecticut until 1700, when the King of England ordered Rye to rejoin the Colony of New York.<\/p>\n<p>The first permanent residents of Harrison&#8217;s Purchase, as it was called, arrived in about 1725, and many early settlers were Quakers, who set up a Friend&#8217;s Meeting House at a settlement located in the part of Harrison now called <a title=\"Purchase, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Purchase,_New_York\">Purchase<\/a>.<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px; line-height: 20px;\">\u00a0<\/span>Harrison&#8217;s Purchase was administered jointly by the settlers of Rye until it was incorporated as a town on March 7, 1788, by an act of the New York State legislature.<\/p>\n<p>Merritt&#8217;s Hill in West Harrison was the site of the <a title=\"Battle of White Plains\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_White_Plains\">Battle of White Plains<\/a> during the <a title=\"American Revolutionary War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Revolutionary_War\">Revolutionary War<\/a>. Regiment 182 of the <a title=\"Continental Army\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Continental_Army\">Continental Army<\/a>, of the 367 regiments there, was the Harrison Regiment, composed solely of people from Harrison.<\/p>\n<p>During the 1830s, David Haviland settled in Harrison where he produced <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Haviland China\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haviland_China\">Haviland China<\/a> which he sold in his store in New York City before returning to his native <a title=\"France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\">France<\/a>. Today there exists a Haviland Street in a neighborhood of Harrison known as &#8220;South Downtown&#8221;, whose only street marker looks rather quite older than the rest in the town, composed of <a title=\"Wrought iron\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wrought_iron\">wrought iron<\/a> in scrolled shapes.<\/p>\n<p>In 1867 Benjamin Holladay purchased the land that is now <a title=\"Manhattanville College\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manhattanville_College\">Manhattanville College<\/a> in <a title=\"Purchase, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Purchase,_New_York\">Purchase<\/a>. On the property is a <a title=\"Norman architecture\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norman_architecture\">Norman-style<\/a> Roman Catholic chapel built for his wife. There is also Reid Castle, once called the Ophir House, before being renamed for a later purchaser. Before that time, Harrisonites had to <a title=\"Request stop\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Request_stop\">flag down<\/a> the train to get a ride. Harrison remained generally free of factories through the <a title=\"Industrial Revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Industrial_Revolution\">Industrial Revolution<\/a>, while large factory districts grew in the neighboring towns of <a title=\"White Plains, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_Plains,_New_York\">White Plains<\/a>, <a title=\"Port Chester, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Port_Chester,_New_York\">Port Chester<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Mamaroneck (town), New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mamaroneck_(town),_New_York\">Mamaroneck<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1929, the <a title=\"Hutchinson River Parkway\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hutchinson_River_Parkway\">Hutchinson River Parkway<\/a> was extended to Harrison.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Political_history\" class=\"mw-headline\">Political history<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In 1967, 200 residents stated support for a plan to incorporate <a title=\"Purchase, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Purchase,_New_York\">Purchase<\/a>, a community in Harrison, so that corporations could not build in the community.\u00a0In response, officials from the Town of Harrison put forward plans to try to become a city to try to stop Purchase from seceding from Harrison.<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px; line-height: 20px;\">\u00a0<\/span>The resolution was for the Town became a hybrid &#8220;Town \/ Village,&#8221; which it remains today.<\/p>\n<p>John A. Passidomo (1921\u20132005) was first elected Mayor in 1965 by only 67 votes. Re-elected eight times, he served until 1983 when he resigned to become Commissioner of the <a title=\"New York State Department of Motor Vehicles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_State_Department_of_Motor_Vehicles\">New York State Department of Motor Vehicles<\/a>.\u00a0In his two and a half years at that job, he helped pass one of the nation&#8217;s first <a class=\"new\" title=\"Seat-belt laws (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Seat-belt_laws&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">seat-belt laws<\/a> despite the law&#8217;s unpopularity.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison&#8217;s &#8220;Platinum Mile&#8221;, a string of corporate office parks along I-287 in the Purchase section of Harrison, developed under Passidomo. The mayor played an instrumental role in attracting large corporations such as <a title=\"PepsiCo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PepsiCo\">PepsiCo<\/a>, <a title=\"MasterCard International Global Headquarters\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MasterCard_International_Global_Headquarters\">MasterCard<\/a> and <a title=\"Texaco\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Texaco\">Texaco<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 1970s, under Passidomo&#8217;s supervision, a group in the Purchase section of town, concerned about the town&#8217;s overdevelopment, attempted to incorporate as a village and thereby separate from the town of Harrison. Creatively, to avoid being served papers that would have begun the legal proceedings for Purchase to incorporate as a village, Passidomo entered his office through the fire escape. According to the <a title=\"United States Census Bureau\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Census_Bureau\">United States Census Bureau<\/a>, the town (and coterminous village) has a total area of 17.4 square miles\u00a0of which 16.8 square miles\u00a0is land and 0.6 square miles\u00a0or 3.22%, is water. The population density was 1,435.2 per square mile. There were 8,680 housing units at an average density of 515.8 per square mile. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.20.<\/p>\n<p>24.5% of residents were under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.2 males.<\/p>\n<p>According to a 2009 estimate,<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px; line-height: 20px;\">\u00a0<\/span>the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Median household income\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Median_household_income\">median household income<\/a> was $104,640, and the median family income was $130,224. Purchase is the main reason for the median household income being so high. The per capita income for the village was $63,742. About 4.2% of families and 5.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 7.8% of those age 65 or over.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Areas_and_neighborhoods\" class=\"mw-headline\">Areas and neighborhoods<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The boundaries of the town of Harrison are the approximate shape of a <a title=\"8 (number)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/8_(number)\">figure-eight<\/a>. The southern half is known as simply Harrison, or downtown, while the hamlet of\u00a0<a title=\"Purchase, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Purchase,_New_York\">Purchase<\/a> is located in the northern portion of the town. &#8220;West Harrison&#8221; is a neighborhood south of Purchase, further west, bounded by <a class=\"new\" title=\"Silver Lake (Westchester County, New York) (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Silver_Lake_(Westchester_County,_New_York)&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Silver Lake<\/a>, the Brae Burn Golf Course, and <a title=\"Interstate 287\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interstate_287\">I-287<\/a>. The &#8220;downtown&#8221; southern half of Harrison is divided into four general areas: The Brentwood, Sunnyridge, Sterling Ridge\/The Trails, and South Downtown.<\/p>\n<p>West Harrison is an isolated community, lodged between a tall hill bordered by a lake, Interstate 287, a tall relatively steep hill, and a cliff at the northern edge. Because of this, there is a general lack of street entrances. There is really only one road into it, although there are a few other &#8220;back&#8221; ways into it. The road is called Lake Street, flanked on one side by Silver Lake Park, bordering the lake, and by a small business district on the other side of the street. West Harrison contains the Passidomo Veterans Memorial Park and Pool and the Leo Mintzer Center. West Harrison also contains the site of the <a title=\"Battle of White Plains\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_White_Plains\">Battle of White Plains<\/a> from the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Revolutionary War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Revolutionary_War\">Revolutionary War<\/a>.\u00a0Silver Lake is also the home of Buckout Road, which was said to have been a home of witches, albinos, and slaughters.<\/p>\n<p>Purchase is a more secluded area of Harrison, with winding roads and deep woods. The houses are larger, in often cases whole swatches of land developed in the late twentieth century, and early 2000s, comparably younger in age to the rest of the town.<\/p>\n<p>Downtown is split into the four sections mentioned above, and is flanked by <a title=\"Interstate 95 in New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interstate_95_in_New_York\">Interstate 95<\/a>, the <a title=\"Hutchinson River Parkway\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hutchinson_River_Parkway\">Hutchinson River Parkway<\/a>, and the <a title=\"Metro-North Railroad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metro-North_Railroad\">Metro-North Railroad<\/a>. The manmade lines create isolation to areas, with few areas to cross each. Harrison&#8217;s only middle school, Louis M. Klein Middle School, and only High School, <a title=\"Harrison High School (New York)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harrison_High_School_(New_York)\">Harrison High School<\/a>, are located in the &#8220;downtown&#8221; area. The four areas of downtown, as separated by the boundaries of Interstate 95 and the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Railroad tracks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Railroad_tracks\">railroad tracks<\/a> as well as separated by wealth gaps, are very diverse.
