Amnesty International urges public to drop death penalty
INTERNATIONAL human rights group Amnesty International Philippines is urging the public to pressure the Senate to drop the possible re-imposition of the death penalty. Ritz Lee II, AIPH chairperson said in Cagayan de Oro, they have so far gathered signatures and some 500 letters from residents addressed to Kagay-anon Senate President Koko Pimentel to oppose death penalty.
8 Cebu lawmakers vote – yes’ to death penalty
MAJORITY of the lawmakers from Cebu voted for the reimposition of the death penalty at the House of Representatives on Tuesday evening, March 7. Among those who voted in favor of the bill were Representatives Peter John Calderon , Wilfredo Caminero , Jonas Cortes , Ramon Durano VI , Gerald Anthony Gullas and Benhur Salimbangon . First district Representative Raul del Mar was the only Cebu lawmaker who opposed the passing of House Bill 4727, which seeks to revive capital punishment for drug-related crimes.
Coup-plotting soldiers go on trial for Erdogan assassination attempt
The trial of more than 40 Turkish soldiers accused of attempting to assassinate President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the July 2016 failed coup attempt started on Feb. 20. Under tight security, the defendants were bussed in to a courthouse in Mugla, not far from the resort where Erdogan and his family narrowly escaped the soldiers in a helicopter. Forty-four suspects, mainly soldiers, are under arrest, while three others still on the run are being tried in absentia.
UN rights experts urge Iran to halt the imminent execution of juvenile offender Hamid Ahmadi
A group of United Nations human rights experts* has appealed to the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately halt the execution of juvenile offender Hamid Ahmadi, who is scheduled to be executed by hanging on Saturday, 4 February. This is the third time that Mr. Ahmadi’s execution is scheduled to take place.
