Rory McIlroy made a mockery of his lack of competitive action so far this season by surging into the halfway lead in the A 7.9million WGC-Mexico Championship. McIlroy’s only previous appearance in 2017 had come in the South African Open in January, when he lost out to Graeme Storm in a play-off despite suffering from what was subsequently diagnosed as a stress fracture to his ribs.

PGA professional and 1992 NZ Open winner Grant Waite has confirmed he will compete in the 93rd instalment of the event, which will be played at Millbrook Resort and The Hills between March 9-12.
