Heavily armed SWAT teams supported by hundreds of other officers detained 14 people suspected of having ties to the Islamic State group in early-morning raids on Thursday, Austrian officials said. An earlier statement from the public prosecutor’s office in Graz had spoken of eight arrests in twin operations there and in Vienna involving 800 police.

Austria’s interior ministry says that police in the country’s two largest cities have conducted raids in their search for suspected Islamic radicals. But ministry spokesman Karl-Heinz Grundboeck says that he will give details once Thursday’s sweeps are completed and evaluated.
