The struggle for the Ras Lanuf refinery and nearby Sidr depot threatens to spiral into an all-out conflict between east and west.

An armed faction overran one of Libya’s main oil terminals and a nearby airport on Friday, engaging forces loyal to military strongman Khalifa Haftar. The Libyan National Army , under Haftar’s control, took control of the terminals of Es Sider and Ras Lanuf – which have a potential combined capacity of around 600,000 barrels per day – in September 2016.

The bodies of 74 migrants who drowned in the Mediterranean trying to reach Europe have washed up on a beach west of the Libyan capital, the Red Crescent said on Tuesday. Residents of the village of Harcha, outside Zawiya, 45 kilometres from Tripoli, alerted the emergency services after finding a wrecked boat on the beach with bodies inside, the Red Crescent said.

The Sharara deposit in the Libya’s south west will ship almost 1.9 million barrels this month from its Zawiya port near Tripoli, according to a loading program obtained by Bloomberg.
