Jim Herman was persuaded to play the Valspar Championship by an influential acquaintance, and he made it pay off Thursday with a 9-under 62 for a two-shot lead. Herman wasn’t getting much out of his game – three missed cuts and a tie for 27th – when he played the Seminole Pro-Member the day after the Honda Classic.

McIlroy two clear at halfway
Rory McIlroy made a mockery of his lack of competitive action so far this season by surging into the halfway lead in the A 7.9million WGC-Mexico Championship. McIlroy’s only previous appearance in 2017 had come in the South African Open in January, when he lost out to Graeme Storm in a play-off despite suffering from what was subsequently diagnosed as a stress fracture to his ribs.

PGA professional and 1992 NZ Open winner Grant Waite has confirmed he will compete in the 93rd instalment of the event, which will be played at Millbrook Resort and The Hills between March 9-12. Not since Dunedin’s Mahal Pearce held the trophy aloft in 2003 has a New Zealander won the trophy, and the drought is set to again be the talking point ahead of this year’s tournament in Arrowtown.
