The world’s most famous sled dog race started Monday with 71 mushers setting off from the heart of Alaska and embarking on a nearly 1,000-mile trek. The grandson of a co-founder of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race was the first competitor on the trail.

Fine for hockey champion Ruzicka over corruption upheld
The financial penalty of 400,000 crowns for a Czech hockey coach, a former national team star Vladimir Ruzicka, who kept half a million crowns that were to be sent to the Slavia Praha club is valid, the Prague Municipal Court ruled on Wednesday, turning down Ruzicka’s appeal. Ruzicka can still file a recourse with the Supreme Court.

International Olympic Committee opens 28 new doping cases for Russian athletes
On yet another doping-tainted day for Russian sport, 28 athletes now face IOC cases linked to cheating at the Sochi Winter Olympics and a major cross-country skiing event was removed from the country. The IOC said Friday it has opened 28 disciplinary proceedings against Russian athletes whose urine samples were likely tampered with at the 2014 Olympics.
