Steam locomotive replaces regular passenger service for first time in 50 years
The romance of steam returns to Britain’s railways for Valentine’s Day as a traditional locomotive hauls passengers on a scheduled main line service for the first time in half a century. The Peppercorn class A1 steam locomotive, Tornado, will pass over the “Roof of England” on the famous Settle to Carlisle line later today, carrying hundreds of steam enthusiasts.

A LEADING GP has warned that doctors could be reluctant to take on extra shifts as a new scheme offering patients appointments seven days a week gets underway. On Wednesday three federations of GP practices, including one in Abingdon, agreed to launch the new service, with additional hours on weekday evenings, and a surgeries on Sunday from 8am to 11am.

Congo police open fire on sect supporters in capital Kinshasa
Police in Democratic Republic of Congo launched an assault on the residence of the leader of a separatist religious sect in Kinshasa early on Tuesday and fired live ammunition and tear gas at his supporters, a Reuters witness said. The assault on the home of Ne Muanda Nsemi, a self-proclaimed prophet and leader of the Bundu dia Kongo sect, began around 4:30 a.m. local time.

A top Pakistani bomb squad officer has been killed along with another policeman while trying to defuse a bomb in the southwestern city of Quetta, police said on Tuesday. Wholesale inflation spikes to 5.25% in January

Report: Syrian government used chemical weapons in Aleppo
Syrian government forces carried out at least eight chemical attacks during the final weeks of the battle for Aleppo , killing nine people including four children, Human Rights Watch said Monday, according to AFP .
