On Wednesday, Mount Vernon resident Garth O'Neil was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in relation to the shooting that left Nolan with a bullet in his head outside of a Burger King on Central Park Avenue.

Schools Turn To Basketball To Help Family Of Fatally Shot Westchester Teen

The Mount Vernon School District will honor 13-year-old Shamoya McKenzie next week, with a varsity basketball doubleheader in her name, featuring the team she loved playing for so much. Next week, on Friday Feb. 3, Mount Vernon High School will play host to the Shamoya McKenzie Memorial Basketball Doubleheader, featuring an afternoon of basketball with both the boys and girls varsity teams facing their rival Scarsdale Raiders.

Authorities Seek Missing Mount Vernon Man With Mental Health Disorders

The New York State Office of Public Safety is seeking the community's help to drum up additional leads as they search for a missing homeless man suffering from mental health disorders that was last seen in Mount Vernon in November. On Monday, the Office of Public Safety announced that 49-year-old James Murphy, who has schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder, has been missing since Nov. 30. He was last seen in the area of Union Avenue and Third Street in Mount Vernon.

Suspect charged with murder in teen’s stray bullet death

A suspect has been arrested on murder charges in connection with the death of a Mount Vernon eighth-grader who was killed by a stray bullet while riding home from basketball practice. Prosecutors say Hardy was aiming for another person when he fired multiple times, striking 13-year-old Shamoya McKenzie in the head as she sat in the passenger seat of a car in Mount Vernon on Dec. 31. McKenzie played on the varsity basketball team at Mount Vernon High School.

Man In I-287 Crash Had BAC More Than Twice Legal Limit, Police Say

A Mount Vernon man was arrested over the holiday weekend after being involved in a car crash with a blood-alcohol content more than double the legal limit on I-287. New York State Police announced Tuesday that Keith Francis, 42, was charged with a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated and a traffic violation for following too closely after being involved in a crash on Saturday.

Police have made an arrest in the fatal shooting of 13-year-old Shamoya McKenzie - the Mount Vernon student who had dreams of playing basketball for the University of Connecticut and the WNBA. Westchester Cab Driver Arrested For Stabbing Passenger, Police Say

A Mount Vernon taxi driver was arrested in Rye on Friday morning after he hopped the sidewalk and struck a tree in his cab before stabbing his passenger in what police described as a "very chaotic scene." On Friday, Rye Police Commissioner Michael C. Corcoran announced that the department has arrested Mount Vernon resident Frankie Phelps, 61, for his role in the altercation that left his 28-year-old victim with non-life-threatening injuries.

A strange scene unfolded in Rye early on Friday morning that ended when a taxi from a Mount Vernon company hopped the sidewalk and struck a tree near an apartment complex after the driver may have been reportedly stabbed, according to News 12. Officials confirmed that approximately 1:30 a.m. on Friday, a cab from Reliable Taxi in Mount Vernon crashed into a tree near the intersection of Highland Road and Purchase Street outside of The Highlands apartment complex in Rye One man was hospitalized with undisclosed injuries. His condition was not immediately available.
