For the first San Pedro Prep Sports college signing of 2017-2018, San Pedro High softball senior outfielder Anessa Quiro z made her early choice, signing her national letter of intent on Wednesday to play collegiate softball at Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York. So far in her first three years, Quiroz has made tremendous impacts at both San Pedro and Port Of Los Angeles High, but since she transferred after her freshman year to play for the Pirates, that's when she has thrived the most, helping the Pirates capture the Marine League and CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I championships in her first full year at San Pedro during her junior season.

‘If You Build It, They Will Buzz:’ New Rochelle Students Craft Bee Habitats

Several New Rochelle elementary school students are working together to create a mini ecosystem they hope will prove to be the "bee's knees." Second graders at Columbus Elementary School helped assemble the first of five outdoor garden beds that will be interconnected to create an environment where colorful flowers will grow, creating a habitat fit for bees, butterflies and birds on the campus grounds.

NRHS Senior Wins County Youth Service Award

New Rochelle High School senior Angel Bonilla gives back to his community in many ways, including volunteering at the New Rochelle YMCA and tutoring fellow students in math. Recently, his willingness to help earned him the Milly Kibrick Youth Service Award, a distinction that was given to 10 seniors throughout Westchester by the County Youth Bureau.

Campus School Hosts Power of Peace Event

Campus Alternative High School hosted its first Power of Peace event for the school year in early October, offering a succession of experiential workshops designed to help students develop skills in conflict management, and feel empowered and connected to their community. Mike Arteberry, executive director and founder of Youth Voices Center in New Rochelle, led the two-day program.

Jefferson Students Progress in Readathon

Jefferson Elementary School students are on course to top a million minutes of reading this month in a readathon that has students logging the time they spend devouring books about Captain Underpants, a Bad Kitty, and a pigeon who really, really wants to drive a bus. Across the City School District of New Rochelle, elementary schools are boosting reading in a project that began with 10-minute Stop, Drop and Read activities on October 2. Jefferson is one of three schools that have taken on readathons this month in which students seek sponsors to donate based on how much time they spend reading.

District Outlines Cultural Competency Initiatives

Two City School District of New Rochelle administrators this week outlined ongoing initiatives the District has taken on to be sure that all students have the same opportunities. "Recognizing the difference between achievement gap and opportunity gap has been an important part of our work," said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Magda Parvey, the District's Chief Academic Officer, at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, held in the Lincoln Attendance Zone.
