More on the Strange Disappearance — and Stranger Reappearance — of Mary Grote of Pelham in 1884

One of the strangest missing person cases ever to arise in the Town of Pelham occurred in 1884 involving a young woman servant who worked in a home at Bartow, a tiny settlement that once stood along today's Shore Road in the Town of Pelham. Indeed, w ith uncharacteristic understatement, The Daily Brooklyn Eagle of October 11, 1884 reported on the matter, saying: "The hamlet of Bartow, on the Sound, near New Rochelle, is excited over the mysterious disappearance of Mary Grote, a young woman employed as a domestic in the family of Mr. May, a well to do farmer, living in that neighborhood.
