With people speculating about what could become the largest protest Sonora has seen in years when Congressman Tom McClintock comes to town this week, local conservatives and progressives are reiterating calls to be respectful of each other’s First Amendment rights. Both sides circulated emails over the weekend that detailed the other’s plans for making their voices heard at town hall meetings scheduled for 6 p.m. today at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds in Mariposa and 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Sonora High School auditorium in Sonora.

House GOP leaders want more security at town halls

House Speaker Paul Ryan and top House GOP leaders are urging rank-and-file members to increase security after several unruly town hall meetings dominated by Obamacare protests, including one that involved a member needing a police escort. Members were cautioned at a closed-door conference meeting on Tuesday to be aware of organized efforts to disrupt events at home and told them take steps to ensure their own safety and that of their aides.

GOP leaders advise House members on dealing with protests

House Republicans are discussing how to deal with protesters showing up at their town halls and other events in their home districts after angry confrontations this past weekend. GOP lawmaker given police escort due to rowdy protesters

Republican congressman Tom McClintock was given a police escort out of a town hall near Sacramento, Calif., on Saturday in response to a mob of protesters at the event, according to local reports. Outside the venue, the Sacramento Bee reported that hundreds of demonstrators gathered, totting signs that read “Resist,” “Dump Tom McTrump” and ” Climate change is real,” signs and chanting “vote him out.”
