Memorial Field Renovation Moves Forward In Mount Vernon

The Mount Vernon Board of Estimate and Contract passed authorization Friday for the City of Mount Vernon to agree to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's consent order. By this order, the City of Mount Vernon has paid a fine of $40,000 for the environmental concerns at Memorial Field and officially begins the process of cleaning-up the impacted areas at the field.

New Details Emerge In Double-Fatal Sprain Brook Parkway Crash

Speed played a role in the one-car crash that resulted in the deaths of two Westchester men on the Sprain Brook Parkway on Thursday, state police said in releasing new details about the incident. State police said that 26-year-old White Plains resident James P. Campion, the driver, and 21-year-old Mount Vernon resident Pedro O. Mattos, the passenger, were killed after Campion lost control of a 1998 Honda Civic traveling southbound on the Sprain Brook Parkway in Greenburgh at a high rate of speed at around 12:18 a.m. Police said Campion attempted to navigate around an uninvolved vehicle, before he lost control of the car, striking the guide rail and then a tree.

Police confirmed that 26-year-old White Plains resident James Campion and Mount Vernon native Pedro Mattos, 21, were killed after losing control of their vehicle and being involved in a single-vehicle accident on the Sprain Brook Parkway in Greenburgh. According to police, the driver sideswiped the guard rail, crossing over all three lanes of the parkway before coming to a crashing halt when he struck a tree on the opposite side of the roadway.

A 35-year-old man is facing an indeterminate sentence in prison after pleading guilty to murdering a cyclist in Mount Vernon last year. On Monday, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino announced that Bobby Jackson of Manhattan pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment for his role in a shooting near the intersection of Third Street and Second Avenue that took the life of a 42-year-old man last April.

Music Studio Fire Breaks Out In Mount Vernon

Firefighters responded to a Mount Vernon music studio after a blaze broke out on a couch, according to News 12. Officials were investigating what may have caused the fire, which drew firefighters to Mes Hall Studios on Washington Street about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, according to News 12.
