10 Mount Vernon Employees Furloughed, Mayor Says

The Mount Vernon Urban Renewal Agency has announced the furloughing of nearly a dozen longtime employees due to a lack of federal funding, according to Mayor Richard Thomas. Officials announced that 10 employees have been granted a leave of absence from their positions as Mount Vernon continues to deal with a "looming financial crisis" within the Agency that "threatened taxpayers as well as the employees."

Students in Mount Vernon continue to see marked improvements on state tests as the school district continues to improve under Schools Superintendent Kenneth Hamilton. The State Education Department released the results of this year's Common Core tests , with proficiency rising in the ELA from 37.9 percent to 39.8 percent and the statewide combined math proficiency score rising from 39.1 percent to 40.2 percent .

Those planning to cool down and beat the heat by " sliding the city " this weekend are out of luck as the event in Mount Vernon has been canceled. Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas announced on Wednesday that "due to a combination of factors outside our control," city officials have been forced to indefinitely postpone the "Slide the City" event, which drew a sizable crowd at the inaugural event last year.

Paul Robert Tesoro, longtime morning show host of Central Hudson's "Almanac" radio program, died Sunday after a long illness surrounded by his family and closest friends. He was 66. Earl Simmons, the rapper DMX who has been accused of cheating the government out of $1.7 million in taxes, was placed under full house arrest in his Westchester home Friday and ordered to wear an ankle bracelet after court officers found cocaine and other drugs in his system. A Mount Vernon native who grew up in Yonkers, the 46-year-old Simmons lived near the Bedford border on McLain Street in Mount Kisco with now estranged wife Tashera Simmons before putting the home into foreclosure in 2016 after filing for bankruptcy.
