Novartis Signals Growing Ambitions for CAR-T Cancer Treatments

Novartis AG is pushing ahead with one of its most ambitious cancer therapies, a treatment that the Swiss drugmaker says has blockbuster potential as it extends that technology to a wider pool of tumor-ridden patients. Europe’s second-biggest drugmaker is planning to test its CAR-T treatments — which involve extracting immune cells and genetically engineering them to hunt and kill cancer cells before returning them into the patient’s body — on lethal cancers of the brain, pancreas, colon, ovary and lung.

London, Jan 30 – The onset of diabetes, or a rapid deterioration in existing diabetes that requires more aggressive treatment, could be a sign of early, hidden pancreatic cancer, warns a new study. The findings are based on an analysis linking nearly a million patients with Type-2 diabetes in Italy and Belgium with recorded cases of pancreatic cancer.

PM: Hospital investments to be covered from excise tax

Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka want a part of the revenue from the excise tax on alcohol and tobacco to go to a fund, from which investments of public hospitals would be covered, he said on Friday. Health Minister Miloslav Ludvik said the health insurance payments that the hospitals receive can cover their operation costs but not their investments.

The director of the Pan American Health Organisation , Dr Carissa Etienne, has warned about what she described as the tobacco epidemic in the Americas, including the Caribbean, saying that though the devastating health effects of tobacco use are well known, tobacco’s negative repercussions extend well beyond the obvious health outcomes. “Tobacco consumption creates a significant economic burden on societies because of both the high costs of health care and the associated lost productivity,” said the Dominican-born Etienne, writing in the Pan American Journal of Public Health.
